New Years Eve

~~~
It was a frigid New Years Eve. St. Ann’s hosted an alternative celebration sans alcohol, nothing stronger than a hot, spicy, apple cider was served. Neighborhood families, elders, free lancing adults and displaced children made the tradition a lively event. Beth had invited Nicole to St. Ann’s. Nicole promised to make an appearance near, if not at the strike of midnight. Her own friends were gathering at the Elysian Fields.
Nicole held court in a large circular booth in The Pub. The Three Musketeers were all working to keep the Fields running smoothly, in this their busiest night of the year. The Fields offered patron everything they might want. Excellent dining in The Garden, a robust pub atmosphere to enjoy conversation and the Elysian Fields itself to dance to hard throbbing music with an occasional slow romantic interlude.
There had just been a mass exodus of Nicole’s party to the Elysian Fields dance floor. Nicole and Kate remained.
Kate brushed back her short auburn hair and leaned back into the booth. “The night is young and I can’t believe I’m ready for bed.”
Nicole looked up to one of The Pub’s antique timepieces. “Midnight isn’t that far off.”
Turning the subject to her latest conquest Kate asked. “So what do you think of Jeri?”
“Seems nice enough. Are you serious?”
“Who knows. Every time I think I’m close there comes a full moon and some nasty transformation.”
“That could be interesting.”
“I’ve had enough ‘interesting’ women in my life, thank you.” Kate reached over and placed her hand on Nicole’s arm. “I’ve heard Page is no longer welcomed.”
“I figured it was about time I take your advice.”
“I don’t think so. You’ve always taken pride in doing the opposite of what I counsel.”
“Only in terms of women. Not your legal advice.”
“How’s Beth?”
“Good. The church has a New Years Eve shindig going on.”
“So I won’t be meeting her tonight?”
“Nope. Anyway, I don’t think it would be a good idea for her to be here. Appearances ya know. I told her I might drop by St. Ann’s for a while.”
“It’s almost midnight.”
“Didn’t I just say that?”
“Why are you here?”
“Beth understands I have friends.”
Kate was insistent. “I’m not talking about what Beth wants. Where would you rather be, here or at St. Ann’s?”
“Kate, she’s a friend.”
“And I’m a friend. What friend would you rather be with? And don’t worry about hurting my feelings.”
“I’m playing with fire.”
“Nicki, I know you. You’re not playing. This is the real thing for you isn’t it?”
Nicole shook her head. “I can’t have her, Kate. No matter how much I love her she’s beyond my reach. But the crazy part about it is that I don’t care. There is something between us. Or at least something I feel that I can’t shirk aside. Right now I don’t need more than Beth. Someday someone else will come into my life and into my bed. I’m sure with time I’ll let go of the impossible. But I can’t deny that the impossible made me want to walk, it made Christmas Eve the best I’ve ever had, and it’s making me impatient to get the hell out of here.
